Snail ID

looks like a spixi

I personally don't have one yet... hopefully one day... but from what I've researched...

Asolene Spixi one of the apple snails (Zebra Apple Snail)- you're lucky to have it as they can't be shipped over state lines. Grow to about ping-pong ball size... mostly nocturnal- they may bury themselves in the substrate during the day. May eat plants when very small but grow out of that by adulthood (unless crossed with a Columbian Ramshorn, which happens- and then they are terrible plant eaters all their life).

Lay eggs below the water line in big clumps.

Sexual reproduction. Only live a year or two- not as hardy as brigs. Low pH is a big no-no. 7.5 at least. Lots of calcium in the water.

Some people report that they eat small snails- although this seems to vary by strain.

They eat Hydras too. :D

Depends really. Is it in a planted tank or have you noticed it eating LIVE plants? It appears to be an Asolene Spixi indeed however it is hard to tell the difference between a spixi and a hybrid marisa/spixi. The only real difference, that I know of, is the marisa/spixi hybrid eats plants whereas the spixi doesn't. Either way I must tell you that it is illegal to transport, either by mailing or driving them, across state lines.
P.S.-I have SO many spixis they are truly my favorite snail.

I think a pure spixi will eat plants, it is just a variable trait. Mine nibble a little on some kinds of plants--but not a lot.
