Snail infestation

every once in a while, i catch the pond snails in my tank chowing down on some BBA.. they keep it pretty much at bay.
I think the snails are eating my plants. I'm going to try to remove them all, and see what happens as the numbers decrease. If things look like they're going better with less, I may see what hapens with some in there. With 20 fish in a 24G to beging with, adding a few loaches, even small ones, might be pushing it. Maybe nce I think the tank has been fully stable for a few weeks I can reevaluate if it can handle more fish.
There are only a few types of snails that have the capability to eat live plants, I believe it's the cana pomacea apple snail. Pond snail aren't nearly strong enough to do the job and even brigs snail, another type of apple snail, can't eat live plants. http://www.applesnail.net/content/species/pomacea_canaliculata.htm

I've pretty much always used HOT filtration, and I've found that, given a snail problem, you can really nip it in the bud by taking the filter out and cleaning it. That's where my mess o' snails was coming from. After I did that, they just kind of faded away.
Veggie/removal trick will help remove the bulk. Less overfeeding will halp maintain low numbers if you knock down eggs when you spot 'em.

I like snails in the tank. If they get too many, it's a sign that I feed to much. Then I reduce the feeding, and I crush the snails I can reach with my fingers on the front glass panel. My fish love that. After a while, the snail population is down again.
Quick question - why do you have to blanch the lettuce/zuccini/cucumber before putting it in the tank please?
I have a farlowella in my 66g tank and he has unblanched cucumber(which the Gourami, flying fox and Molly all seem to like to have a go at, not to mention the clown loaches who click excitedly when they are on it!)
