Snail or no snail?

I wasted a minute or two reading to find out if a snail is really worth having and did not see an answer.

Snails will not provide you with effective algae control and will increase the bioload of your tank.

I have some snails in my guppy tank that are there accidently (via live plant) and I am slowly trying to kill them off because I fear overpopulation. Is this a possibility? or should I just leave the few that are somehow still alive alone and see what happens.

Pond snails can only over populate if there is food available to them, however they may use your plants as a source of food.

Some people hate the random snails "hitchhikers" from plants or whatnot. I personally don’t mind at all. They don’t hurt any of my plants (yet), they pick up any garbage if any, and I hardly ever see them. They usually come out at night when the lights are out... If it ever does become a problem, no worries, my puffer will have free snacks. :)

You might want to take into consideration all of the advice people give on this forum. At first they seem harsh, but the people here love fish and love keeping them. They just want to give you the best advice on how to keep your fish in good health, both physically and mentally.

If you do decide to get one of the bigger snails (mystery / apple / rams) I hope you take the advice and cut your stock back a bit.

What?! We "graduate" the goldfish to my parents' coy pond when they grow to a few inches long. And how do you know that a "schooling" fish isn't just fine without others of his kind? Does someone here practice Fishy Psychoanalysis? lol (no offense intended, some of us take this hobby WAY too seriously)

Well forgive me for taking the life of any animal or even person seriously. And I'm sorry I couldn't read your mind about the goldfish being "graduated" to a pond at a few inches. Really, if you want to ask for advice, then do so, however, don't bother asking if you really don't want it. Fish/aquarium keeping isn't just throwing some fish in a tank. If you do it right, your fish will live long happy lives and you get to enjoy watching them over the years :)

dorkfish,
I totally agree about the 6 however, I was looking at the tank size. I know 6 is far better than 3 however, 3 is better than 1. Not perfect, but could be worse if you know what I mean :)

We decided last night to skip the snails and son is buying two more tiger barbs. So far the barb isn't bothering his tank mates. My son is only nine and just lost his sister in a car accident. We are trying to keep him busy. We are learning together. God bless you all, and I hope you can take a deep breath and lighten up. People are more important to me than fish anyday. I won't be back.

unreal.....she should be thankful....at least she was getting answers to her question!

But it makes me sad to hear about a single tiger barb being kept with other fish, sad for the barb and the other fishes it will torment because it lacks companionship. Tiger barbs are fun and active, but they really need to be with others to play the way they like, and they nip nip nip, everything that goes in the tank, including my arms. They are not schooling fish in the way that some others are, but they need to be kept in groups (or in a species only tank) to save the rest of your fish. It isn't psychology so much a

Thats good ur gettin more barbs HOPE they don't attack the other fish!

sorry for your loss Jamie.
