Snail Over Population

A couple of assassin snails would work really well in thinning out the population. They can eat around 2 snails a day and they won't mass produce like your normal pest snails.
Very true, but then what do you feed your assassins?
Not overfeeding, regular gravel vacs, and picking them out when you see them is the easiest way to control them IME.It's not the fastest way to get them under control, but it will work.Setting traps with veggies also works well to get them more manageable a bit quicker.

Once all the snails are gone the assassin snails will take bloodworms. You can also ask your Lfs to give you some more snails lol. it sounds kinda crazy to knowingly put pond snails in a tank but the assassins will take care of them :D

The problem with feeding the assassins bloodworms is the fish will eat them too.The odds of the assassins getting a chance to eat them are very slim.

i really think we should stop suggesting creatures be added to tanks when the problem(s) can be simply fixed by human effort. it is not really all that responsible to increase the number of creatures in your care when you have issues regarding the ones you are caring for already.

I completely agree with BFM on this one. Normally Snail Over Population is a result of the owner adding way to much food for them to consume. I would suggest trying to cut back on the amount of food added. Ok now Im off to read the begging of this thread.

I Must Have The Ideal Conditions

For snails that is. I have been working on de-snailing for about a month now. I have trap with bait and it is working, (I catch about 25 snails a day). I have been doing two water changes recently per week. And I have been trying to catch as many snails as I can with the water down. Someone asked how big a tank, this is a 45 gallon tank. I am changing 8 gallons one time a week and 13 gallons the other time, (I have a five gal and 3 gallon bucket.). I've also started growing more alge and am scrubbing the inside glass each change.

The good parts are that my water parameters seem to be stable. The fish seem healthy. My plants are starting to show new growth. The less than good parts are way too many snails and this is more work than I originally thought.

well, as to the not suggesting the addition of additional lifestock to manage existing livestock, some times that is exactly what is required for management, now that said the OP i believe wishes total removal, and there i agree, adding stock is not the answer, and i really liked that trap idea. currently i simply use a net to dispose of the overabundance of snails, but that trap idea has merit.

Does size of the bottle play into it at all?

Sometimes a limited snail population is desired, and overfeeding is required or a necessary result. for that i like the Zebra loach approch, it is effective, and can be limited
