It will slow the filter down a bit, but a better solution is simply to find or make a longer intake strainer. The aquaclear strainers are notorious for being dangerous to inverts because they are much too short. If you can find a longer strainer for a different filter that will fit onto the aquaclear, that should be sufficient in keeping the snails safe.

I agree. Don't be too quick to discard the snail. They can and will hibernate for quite a while until they feel safe.
