Yep, you heard it! It's snail time! I'll be receiving 5 pea-sized spixis snails!

What can I feed them and how can I feed them? When I have super hungry rainbows flyin around:D

Is food really necessary when I have some dead matter lying around?dead leaves, etc

I found this online.

Worth it? Or I can make me own or something.

Theres an awesome snail jello recipe in a sticky above.

i agree.

green collards and calcium rich food. a ph above 7 will help good shell growth.

I had spixis eat up my crypts and tiger lotus, so keep an eye on them. They left all my other plants alone. Also beware, they are VERY prolific layers and their clutches are laid under water in white gelatinous sacs. They are good at hiding them behind the heater, under plant leaves, inside decoration, and anywhere they can find. I was picking 4 or more out a DAY. These are ILLEGAL to ship across state lines without permits and its virtually impossible to get the permits, I have tried 3 times now and been denied. That being said, they are lovely snails. Good luck and enjoy them.

lol this makes me think twice getting them now ;) Can they reproduce without a pair?

I'm actually the seller of the spixis and they aren't prolific if you don't let them. I actually control their breeding. I never feed my spixi algae wafers and all they get are small pieces of leftovers that my fish don't eat. Like all snails, if you limit their food source, they will not breed. When I do want them to breed however, I purposely dump in 2x more algae wafers than you should normally be giving them. This will be followed up with them laying eggs.
I kept mine with crypts before, ate ONLY the melted leaves (melted from transferring tanks) and left the healthy ones alone. I can't speak much for tiger lotus, never kept that plant.

They require male and females to reproduce. But like I said, if you don't want them mating, don't feed them. Limit their food source and you can easily control their numbers. They are NOT like ramhorns and pond snails, where even when you stop feeding, they still lay some eggs. My spixis literally just stopped making eggs when I don't feed them. And do make eggs once I start plopping a bunch of wafers for them to eat.
This is actually how I churn out my spixis to sell in CA :-) Speaking of which, my spixis haven't laid eggs in over a month. I'm running low now, due to many buyers, so it's time to plop a ton of wafers again.
