Snails at 2 different box stores ....OMG!

I went to 2 different stores the other day- to pick up some stuff for my new babies, just to see if their snails looked any better.

Well, at one the poor snails they had, had stringy fungus covering their poor shells. :mad2: I found out though, thankfully the near me is getting rid of their live fish. I asked why and they said their good fishperson doesn't work there anymore and they are losing money on their fish. too many are coming back dead. I said I knew the problem and they were all shocked and asked me. Told them that they keep too many fish in one tank and that it causes all kinds of health problems for the poor creatures. I went on to tell them some of the things the poor snails need and they were shocked.

Then at the other..........who usually takes great care of the animals......I started crying. It took a while before I found their snails......when I did, I wished I hadn't. :swear: Almost every one had a huge hole in the shell or the lip of the shell was wearing away. there were several dead ones-the snails little flat shells that cover the shell openings had come off. I told them what they should do, and gave them this site. I'm glad I found this site!
I hope the employees come here. I bought a zuchini and took it there. I thought they might like a treat. They actually did put some of it in the tank while I was there.

oops, this is in the wrong forum......should be in FRESHWATER!!! Oops!! didn't see "marine" I was so upste.It needs moved.
 
Wow, that's really bad.:( Sorry to hear that, Sunshine! If I were you though, start first by determining the pH, KH and GH. This will help you know where to start. The lack of calcium is however evident by the severe shell erosions and improper maintenance by the production of excess slime by another snail. Hopefully, some snails may still be saved by your actions.
 
and almost all of the snails at the 2nd store were marble sized, so they couldn't have been very old. There were a couple that were a little bigger, but not by much. And I'm normally happy with how their fishies look. their small animals and birds too.
The employee had a laughing fit when I told her she might want to give the poor things tums. She said, "What, like a snail gets heartburn?" And I asked her what the water parameters were.......she said they're fine, haven't tested in a while, but I'm sure they're still fine." Those poor snails.

Mine will darn well be better cared for than that!!! I hope none of mine die. Either way I will do my best for them. I almost want to buy theones from the store even if they might die just so I can try and help them! Yes, I know that's probably not a good idea. I just can't stand to think of those poor snails dying in those aquariums. Too bad all snails can't have as good and caring breeders/sellers/owners as the people on these forums.

I mean,I never knew so much about snails before I came here-I'm a TOTAL snail newbie! I guess I'm getting my chance to try out my snail keeping ability.

If I had my way, I'd confront them and let me be one to take care of them. I wouldn't buy them though. Perhaps just ask for a lower credit or for free. In their condition, the current price isn't right.
 
Yeah, they're asking $4 for the gold ones, and $3 for the wild colored ones.
at the first store listed it's like $2.50 for them.

I've always been a good customer of the 2nd store.........then I saw their snails. I've been going there for the last 8 years. Never though, with the thought of keeping snails. They're nice people. Just clueless about snails. Like I was till coming here.

The first store however......I'm glad they're getting rid of their live critters.

It's unfortunate but you can't convince everyone to feel the same way you feel. The best thing you can do is try to educate them to the best of your ability, write them a letter of complaint, or something to that nature. It's sad and it's animal abuse but most people don't look at it that way because they figure if it's not a cat, dog, bird, or hampster then it's not a pet. Hopefully you can educate them, or let them know that you will be taking your business elsewhere because you do not approve with their methods of caring for their aquatic pets, snails being the top of the list.
 
I called the store today. The store manager answered. She is one of the ones I like there.(We are on a first name basis, I'm there so often) I asked her if the employee gave ther the site address here. You can guess what she said. NOPE! So I gave it to her, and mentioned my concerns about their snails. And guess what! All their water runs through a water softener! she is going to come and read on this site. YAY! I told her that snails like veggies and that it would be a good idea to give the snailies tums-At least I figured that from reading here
