I just purchased a baseball size clump of java moss to put in my 16g bowfront. I bought it from an unknown seller on ebay. I noticed when i got it that it has "one" snail on it. What do I do to keep these from overtaking my tank. Right now I have the moss anchored to a river rock and in a bucket of old tank water. Should I put it in my tank???? I have 2 cory catfish and 5 neon tetras in my tank and some amazon swords. My parameters are temp 76, ph 7.2, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate usually 5-10. thanks!

Snails are a good thing for your tank. If you get a couple thats okay unless you just really hate them for some reason, each to his own I suppose. They wont overrun your tank if you don't overfeed your fish. If there is nothing for them to eat, they will die off.

So I dont' need to freak out, lol! Ahhhh, good. My other question is I have a hob penquin 100 filter, do I have to worry about the java moss infiltrating my filter if I have it anchored to a river rock? I am going to orient it in the opposite corner but have my heater there right now. Any advice?

I don't have any problem with my java moss getting into my filters. I have an emperor 400 and if anything is going to suck it up, that will. I have all mine tied down to driftwood. If you want it to look nice and even on the rock, then make sure you spread it out pretty thin, otherwise it will look kinda clumpy when it grows out.

I agree with Jodi, snails are benficial. But I can also see why most don't like them. I'd rather not have them in my 36G tank, but they are tough to get rid of. On the other hand I love having them in my 7.5G. They do an excellent job cleaning. I usually move the ones I find in my 36G to my 7.5G during tank cleans. My 7.5G is probably the most balanced tank I've had.

They can run rampant though. If you don't think you want snails at all, I wouldn't even put that in the tank. The eggs that snails lay are in a clear mucus that you may not be seeing (could be tucked away in the ball).

Well i banded the moss onto a large river rock and put it in my tank. I squished the four snails i found, knowing full well there will be more. I don't think I overfeed so they shouldn't be a problem, hopefully they will help. Will the little threads of moss that fell off when i placed the moss cause any concern? I have fished out most of them. Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, i am very new to plants. Thanks for the advice so far!

The loose threads of moss might make it to the impeller of the filter ans wind inself around the axle shaft; no problem normally as it comes off with a little work with a toothbrush (hopefully one dedicated for filter cleaning ) when you do your monthly ( or whenever) filter cleaning.

As for snails, whenever I see one in my tanks, they get picked out and dropped into my Jack Dempsey tank-don't last long enough to hit the bottom. I'm sure there's a lot more in there!

send some snails over to me, my puffer sure can go for some
