Snails or shrimp in a tiny tank?

Hi I've got a tiny fish tank (around 3.5g) and I'd like to get something for my kids, I've ruled out fish because of the size of the tank (originally thinking of a small shoal of tetras) so i was wondering if I could have some form of snail or shrimp in there. I've never looked into snails or shrimp before but I have had a bigger tropical tank. Realistically can I keep anything in this tank? I'd like something that the kids can actually see, it doesn't matter if they are hiding away during the day or anything, I'd just like it if they didn't need to use a magnifying glass to see them!

I'd like a minimum of two snails/shrimp so the boys can name one each. What options have I got? I'm in the UK so I'd like something I could get locally. I appreciate any help as I'm a newcomer to this world, and please go easy!

Regards, Craig.

I don't know if you can get them locally but nerite snail are very pretty and small. in my experience with shrimp the 2 yellow shrimp I had in a 2.5 gallon lost their color and just kinda sat around all day. I read that they prefer to be in larger colonies which would explain why they were not happy. If you do get shrimp I would go with at least 5

:iagree: nerites are ftw. lots of different kinds from which to choose

I like nerite snails also. They will not get out of hand since they need brackish water to breed and they come in so many different colors.

For dwarf freshwater shrimp like cherry shrimp, the general rule is 5-10 max per gallon depending on other bioload and tank maintenance. Shrimp are a bit harder to care for since they are sensitive to nitrates. Weekly water changes area must if not twice weekly. Cherry shrimp are the cheapest and hardiest and can tolerate a wide range in parameters and temperatures. There are tons of colors for shrimp though. Green, blue, red, orange, yellow, etc. Some colors cant be housed together due to interbreeding (then you'll have a bunch of brown shrimp), so check the genus name. Same genus it is best not to house them together.

Thanks for the replies, I'll have a look further into the options mentioned. How many of the Nerite snails could I house in the 3.7 gallon tank?
