If i took all my fish out of the tank how long would it take for the snails to die or would they just start eating the plants? The snails are pond snails. This is a thread with pics. http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=230728
Dont think that taking outfish will cause the pond snails to go away. Are they really that bad? They control their own population. I have a few, that are always in there, but certainly nothing I would consider annoying. Get a loach?
You shouldn't buy a fish to solve a problem, especially with fish that may outgrow your tank. Cut back on your feedings, they reproduce quickly because they've got lots of food. You can bait the snails with lettuce of sliced zucchini - leave overnight & remove the next morning.
No they aren't really that bad yet. But i have had them before when i had discus in the tank and they got uncontrollable. Now i have a community tank with about 8 cory cats eating the leftovers so they might not get that bad this time. I just don't want to go through what happen last time.
IMO thinking of your cories as "clean up" will encourage you overfeed (to make sure they get enough "extra"). You should give them sinking wafers and use restraint with your flake/frozen food. Fish do not need to eat heavily every day... If you do so, amounts should be small.
If you are worried about snails, but they aren't a "problem" yet, you could do manual removal during water changes. Also, crushing a few will provide a food source for your fish.
bait them like fishycat mentioned, then switch the bait out when you get a chance. once in the tank daily til you get the numbers down where you want them... then again whenever you see them.
