Snails

An infestation of small snails can be eradicated, or at least very heavily reduced & well controlled/ kept in check, by using some Flourish Excel in the recommended dosage on the bottle. Metricide also works extremely well, but one must be somewhat careful with it - it has double the strength of excel (so use 1/2 the dosage) & slightly different overall properties. Try excel, it has given me great results with removing snails & it does wonders at reducing/almost eliminating algae in a planted tank.
Try it.

Excel for snail control? I use this in my tank with MTS & Ramshorns with no casualties... Now I'm curious, will need to re-read the label.

I assumed you were talking about an infestation of small non-descript "pest" snails which may have come into your tank via eggs laid on plant leaves, or some such thing.
If you have large snails acquired for some beneficial effect & appearance in your tank, that's a different story - excel will deal with eggs & newly hatched, or very small, snails, but as far as large snails one purchases for a reason, I can't advise - if you got them for some benefit, then I suppose you live with the consequences of their egg-laying, or try the excel for reducing the "baby" population.
Hope that helps.

I'm not entirely sure how the carbon content of excel results in doing away with small snails. It just happened to work for me while I was dosing excel for algae control. I had a heavy snail infestation for many weeks, but once I started dosing with excel, the snail population almost disappeared in 2-3 days. Curious then, I checked with some expertise on SimplyDiscus.com, and sure enough, the "experts" confirmed, from their own experience, that excel had that effect.
Wish I could tell you more.

I'd be concerned about losing the beneficial bacteria in the tank should you remove all the fish. It could take quite a long time, and I do mean long, to starve out snails.
I would just bait and catch, crush what you can and put a sponge prefilter on your intake as they and their eggs can get into the filter too.
Just make it part of your routine and it won't seem so frustrating...

oh lordy, this i know all too well! pond snails abound in my canister filters even though i never see a single one in the tank (but i suppose with an oscar in there i wouldn't now, would i? :grinno:).

So I've been looking around online... :read::pc:

I've found posts from different forums re: issues with snails/shrimp/fish when overdosing Excel to treat algae. Some say they have die-offs if they don't acclimate the tank by dosing Excel in small increments before applying a normal dose. Some say that they've never had any problems dosing Excel in their tanks with inverts.:rolleyes::nilly::screwy::shakehead::grinyes::hypnotized:

Dont think that taking outfish will cause the pond snails to go away. Are they really that bad? They control their own population. I have a few, that are always in there, but certainly nothing I would consider annoying. Get a loach?

YEAP, more specifically a Clown Loach ( I know I KNOW "you need to have more than one in the tank) LISTEN go to petsmart or petco, or if you have a lfs that you have a good rep with buy one and once it is all fat and happy take it back. They would love a bigger Clown, I'd say give it about 1 1/2 months and NO MORE SNAILS
