thanks for all the responses. I went for a week long vacation - the occasion was my cousin's wedding. The wedding wound up being rescheduled due to her father being ill and unable to attend, but we all went for the vacation anyway (16 of us!). It's the first time I've been anywhere "exotic" and it was REALLY nice to get away.
I LOVED Cuba, and will definitely visit again. It's a beautiful country, with a fascinating history and culture, and the people are just amazing. If you're planning to visit, I'd recommend going a little later in the year than we did, so the weather is more predictable (it was warm, but rained a couple days and was too choppy to go in the water all but two days). I'd also strongly advise learning at least a little bit of Spanish. They speak English in the resorts, but if you want to
really experience Cuba, you'll need to go off the beaten tourist track, and that will mean speaking at least some Spanish. FWIW, I don't speak Spanish, but got by passably with French, however, I would have gotten a lot more, culturally, out of the trip if I spoke Spanish, and plan to learn before I go back.
However, if you don't care about culture and just want to eat and beach, then english is fine
