so heres a odd question.

i know i just wanted some evidences because out of all the bills i help pay here water isnt one of them, and you guys just helped me prove that even if i was doing weekly water changes its still not the cause. thanks everyone.

If you are getting public water, it's a very simple calculation. Every water bill will have a chart of the amount for every 1000gal. The next breakdown is probably broken into tier. eg. $ per every 1000gal for the first 10K gallon with the rate going higher or lower on the next tier. A sewage fee may be tied to the water usage as well.

$500 for a water bill is a lot but it really depends on where you live. Where I live, I do water changes every 2-3 days on a few hundred gallons and my water bill is still around $100.

If the issue was a scottish highlander I would expect you to skirt it :)

what I am referring to is this how can you have a tank without a water change in 3 mths, so what is living in this half full 55g tank?

maybe he receives quarterly water bills? even then i think the bill is too high unless there is a leak somewhere in the line.

even with this water issue you should really be doing weekly water changes becasue of the build of of a lot of things that can harm/kill your fish. but that is not necessarily on topic.

If your girlfriend's fathers house is an older home it may have a water main leak most likely under the driveway if it crosses there. When I was 22 in the Navy I was renting a very old home (tiny) in Spring Valley Cali. The land lord complained that the water bill had jumped $100 and wanted to know why. He ended up digging under the gravel driveway to discover the patch he had made using PVC years ago had failed under the wight.

Anyway although the circumstances are different the cause may be the same and you will have to investigate it as the city has no responsibility unless the brake occurs on a public street. The longer you wait, the bigger the sink hole will get with regards to the water leak.

Having said all that let me apologize for the earlier advice I gave if it offended you as my point should have been stated much much shorter without the drama.

I live in San Diego and we are in a drought with mandatory water conservation. I do 33% water changes in 4 of my tanks, a 55G, a 40G, a 20G and a 3G once a week and in my other brackish tank I do it every 2 weeks. My water bill is about $30.00 a month. So I would want to know why the water bill is so high also. Maybe you have a leaky pipe somewhere.

i use more water taking a shower than i use doing a 50% water change i have a 30 g and a 55 g if i were you a would live in my own house

i'd ask to trade bills... water for the ones i'm paying that are just under equivalent. then investigate the situation yourself. i'd think either your chain has been pulled and that particular person just don't want you there or as others have stated there's an underlying problem.

guys are guys and another alpha in the house although may be welcomed in some ways always triggers a challenge of some sort whether it be spoken
or not. it's instinctual and although people have the upper part of the brain that supports rational thought every action or thought still mostly flows through the lower (fight or flight) portion. that's my experience take it for what it's worth but your bill is astronomical if it's true.

good luck, seems like a bad spot for a young couple. sounds petty to me also.

im more interested in whats living in that tank
