:iagree: 25 gallons without any water changes in 3 months....those are some tough little fish. I suggest you start regular water changes, for your fishes sake!
By the way, what is the reason for it being half empty?

The highest water rate here in Cleveland is ~$55 per MCF, 1 MCF = ~ 7500 gallons.

I think I'd be checking the meter against the reading on the bill.

You could have
-a defective meter
-a leak somewhere
-incorrectly estimated readings (high)
-low estimated readings going on for too long, then they do an actual reading and bill you for the difference all at once.
 
yeah thanks for clearing that up, the reason i dont do water changes that often because my tank rarely needs it, i have had other tanks that need regular water changes, and i have no idea whats going with the 50 gallon that causes it to stay stable, but it does. and i test the water weekly at my lfs. me and the owner of the store are stumped on why it stays stable and hes a 30 year marine biologist.
 
The reason that you don't have to do water changes as often is because you have an established biological filtration and you are not overfeeding. I have had tanks that I only need to do changes on once or twice a year. Of course these are not my breeder tanks but just my show tanks. Friends and family can not believe that my tanks stay so clean and the water is so crystal clear without me changing the water or adding chemicals. I hate chemicals and try not to use them. I have been in the breeder business for approx. 15 years now and the fact that your tank staying clean for 3 months does not suprise me at all. It just means your tank is established and you are doing a good job of feeding and not overfeeding.
 
are you talking about the bio filter i built with the airstone, bottle, and substrate. my uncle showed me how to build it and said ever since he has had his he rarely does water changes. i had built it for a ten gallon that my filtler broke on, and i had it full of jack dempsey juvies, that tank was filthy no matter how many water changes i did, and when i put the bio filter in it cleared up in a couple of hours.

I have well water, but had ''city'' water at one time. I agree with the above suggestions. Check all faucets, toilets -(tight sealed stopper in tank), outside too, for leaks.

Someone I know had a neighbor using their outside faucet while they were not at home....:screwy:
 
If you don't mind me asking, what was the setup like that you did 1-2 water changes a year on?.

I don't think low maintance tanks and conditioning fish for breeding are compatible.
