so i had eggs, i had fry, the mother was guarding the nest, and now all of the fry are gone. i think the male ate them all sometime last night. lame. i thought the convicts were supposed to be good parents
Some parents of the same species care for fry longer than others. Once the wrigglers start to free swim you need to keep a close eye for cannibalism. Giving a good supply of food will also help parents from eating fry as parent fish know their food allowance and will not even tollerate their own fry as competition.
If you are successful with breeding fish..might I suggest you find a "wild caught only" species to focus on? It helps the environment, plus the fry have a high demand world wide.
If this was the first time eggs were laid I wouldn't worry about it. It took my cons a couple tries to get things right. I moved my male into another tank because I can't keep up with all the babies being born.
