So I went a little nuts...now I need advice

Those temps are certainly possible for my basement and I doubt I'd need a heater but I would probably have one just as backup.

I'm seeing pictures of some beautiful comets. They seem quite nice. Flaringshutter, you said that fancies seem to be more net and hand friendly. Would you say that they have more personality? Or are more interactive with people? If I am going to make the committment to a fish for the lifespan that a goldfish has, I want it to be a personalble relationship. My kids will also get attached to them I think.

When you say that a large sump will allow me to keep more fish, can you define large? I have only seen a sump set up once and I am really clueless about how to do it. I'll research it though, don't worry!

I actually think that single-tail fish have more personality, but only by a smidgen. All varieties are extremely friendly and will develop a strong bond with their owner. It's just that with their large size and that powerful torpedo-shaped body, singletails can be a handful to net, or move in or out of a tank.

For a 180 gallon tank, I'm thinking a 40-60 gallon sump? You don't really NEED one, and even a small sump would help, but a 40-60 gallon would be a good size. That much extra water would significantly increase your stocking capacity.

I hope you haven't started filling that tank!!!

PLEASE save yourself work and heartache by waiting until you have finished the basement before setting up your dream aquarium!!!

The dusts that are involved in renovating almost any space would be a nightmare for your fish! Sawdust and sheetrock dust, for instance, get EVERYWHERE. I don't think you could possibly protect your tank from it, no matter what kind of hood, and/or dust covering, you use!!!

SkWsdm, thanks for the warning. If I set it up before we renovate, I will get comet goldfish and will time the renovation during spring/summer/early fall so that I can move them outside to a livestock tank.

I won't even consider any other fish for this situation....and since I consider them to be pets, I am prepared to make the long term commitment to them. I also have small kids who I think will really like goldfish!

While I appreciate the beauty in the diversity of all the natural world, I think they are truly hideous! My husband also can't stand looking at those "goldfish that have their brains on the outside of their heads".

:iagree::rofl::rofl:

ah yes, when I read your post I thought "wen" was a typo because I'd never heard of it. After a little sniffing around using the search function, though, I found a thread about orandas - http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=173014&highlight=oranda . You couldn't see me when I was looking at the pictures, but that 4th one had me shuddering =/. That's not to say I didn't like the tank, it had a very concise feel to it, which I enjoyed.

But as for the orandas...you can trim those?
