If I put together a tank that had no substrate, had the lights facing upwards from underneath the tank, and had the rockwork attached to the top of the tank, so it was 'floating' and not touching the bottom?

Would my fish be swimming upside down?

And would upside down catfish swim right side up? :read:

some fish are very light dependant for their orientation, so yes you could have an upsidedown tank. But I doubt that a fish like an oscar would be fooled.

I recall reading something about goldfish in tanks with just side lighting, and the goldies did start swimming to orient with the light above them--they reverted back when the light was moved. Don't know if it would be harmful or not--depends on if the swim bladder is shaped for orientation upright or not. If it is, I would guess that it may increase pressure on some organs.

LOL Slip. Didn't someone just mention they miss Hans?

For what it's worth (;)), my angelfish swims completely obliquely in the morning, beforeI turn on its lights, because the light pours in sideways from the deck door.

Or if they were s.w. heck in my tanks a lot of them don't really seem to care too much which way is up or down anyway.

:D

But on a side note - and for future generations...
If you could set-up an aquarium on Mars, would the fish turn a reddish orange color? :idea2:

No, but they'd swim a lot faster and be more buoyant.
