Soda Vs. Pop Vs. Coke...This is Pretty Cool

I have said pop all my life....we get people in my restaurant saying what is pop...and say they want a soda...I say okay....

They are the people who scare me... the ones who have no idea that there are varios names for it... sure we all use one in particular most of the time, but we are atleast aware there are different names for it.

I was born and raised in Ohio...a "pop" state but I chose to say soda b/c I am a bit AR about using verbs as nouns and vice versa. I'm weird I know. :)

wow, thats a neat little map. I always assumed that here in chicago most everybody said coke. guess i was wrong (around 80% call it pop)

the rest of IL, aside from very far south IL, if you ask for a coke, you'll get a coke or be asked if pepsi is ok, coke is a specific name and only a specific name everywhere i've lived. I've found it to be about half soda and half pop, and its pretty interchangable for me, though i grew up with pop as a more frequant term i think. the whole coke thing though, is as alien as mars.

I usually just call them by name. Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Sprite, etc.
Collectively, I call them 'drinks.'
I hear 'soda' or 'cola' being used more than anything around here. I very rarely hear anyone say 'Pop.'
It sounds so 'Leave it to Beaver,' to me.
"Gee Wally, I want a pop!" lol

The only time I use pop is using it as a general term like...

"Hey want anything to drink?"

"Sure"

"We have pop, beer, water, etc..."

"What kind of pop?"

"Coke, Dew, Sprite..."

Otherwise I use specific names...

Interesting....

Coke is Coke.

Soda means a variety of carbonated flavored drinks down here.

Pop was old fashioned for someone's Dad.

:D
