I've heard of people using peat in the filter to soften water safely.
I was thinking of doing this and just had some questions.
Can I use garden peat moss or is it necessary to buy peat meant for aquariums? How often does peat have to be replaced to be effective?
And finally, how effective is it really at softening water? My tank has 3 HOB filters, each rated for up to the tank capacity, so if I stuff a media bag of peat into one or two filters, would that help much? (Water's about 15-18 dH, and I just want to get an idea on what fish I could consider).
