Hello all. What type of soil do you use in your ponds for your plants. I ordered some lillies and baskets to plant them in but now I need to pick up the soil. Thanks Justin
I've heard that it's best to use simple garden soil, that's what I use, in pots. I tried topping off the tops of the pots with play sand, but my koi found that to be a toy and nosed it all out of the pots. So instead I put small rocks on the tops of the pots around the plants. To fertilize, I push a tomato spike all way down into each pot in the spring.
There is actually several things you can use.
Sand, top soil, garden soil, plain kitty litter and pea gravel.
My preference is top soil. I buy it bagged at Home Depot. Its good plain dirt without any other junk in it. Top the pots with pea gravel to help keep dirt and plant in the pot.
Many people use kitty litter for their lilies but I personally don't recommend it. I think it makes a huge mess and it can become unbelievably smelly.
Another option is planting in straight pea gravel. Some have good luck with this method as well. It didn't work for me though.
You may want to experiment a little bit and find what works best for your pond and its environment.
I would also recommend using something other than the plastic mesh plant baskets. They get brittle fast and tend to break really easy.
Wide shallow pots are best for hardy lilies as the grow horizontally, not vertically. Dishpans, plastic oil drain pans, etc. work well.
