Hi all

I thought I'd share a few pictures of my plecs. Blowy the Gibbiceps, Snowman the Snowball, Yellowman the BN and Goldman the Gold Nugget.

The substrate is soft Welsh slate, I have it in my garden and it's ok to walk barefoot on it - the fish seem to enjoy it. I vacuum it twice a week which is a bit of a chore, but I think it looks great.

I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Gorgeous fish! The substrate is very nice.

Stunning fish. They aren't territorial?

Very original substrate. Works well with the wood which is also very nice. And very nice fish.

Do you have anything under the slates or is it just slates on top of glass?

Hi all, thanks for the kind words. I live in Wales, and Welsh slate is abundant here so I thought I'd give it a go; I think it works well. There is a thin (5mm) layer of fine sand underneath the slate, I had visions of being able to plant into this but I don't think it's going to work.

The fish get along fine without any significant territorial issues - they each have their own favourite places in the tank and there's no arguing or bullying. I did have a Rusty plec until recently, but he was a terrible bully, so sadly had to be rehomed.
