Some SW Equipment Questions

Hmmm... reconsidering...

I'm rethinking doing SW. (Yes, I know what some of you are thinking (especially antitang): AGAIN!)

But, right now, the cost may be too much for me. When I do SW, I want to do it right w/ great equipment. One of the things that really makes me want to do SW is that there are no FW eels. I might go with cichlids instead.

I'm gonna be doing some serious thinking over the next few days.

Thank you, everyone, for your posts.

Come on, cichlids are cool, but the equipment cost is practically the same, minus the protein skimmer and monthly cost of salt.

I think you forgot the fact that pretty much every SW fish costs about 1,000% of what a FW fish would cost...

Anything you read in a book will not compare to actual experience, just like its a myth that fish only get so big in captivity compared to being in the wild, the reason usually is it dies in captivity before it can get any bigger :)

And yes Snowflake Moreys will eat fish.

Also dont use a UGF at all, just remove it completly because a UGF nulifies the reason for having a DSB (Deep Sand Bed). Also Silica playsand is fine, its a myth that Silica sand will encurage diatom blooms, and for Aragonite substrate to have any real buffering ability the PH would have to be reall low.

In terms of Starfish it depends on what type of Starfish. Brittle Stars are good for cleanup and may need some supplimental feedings of meaty foods, however green Brittle stars are the only Brittle Star that will hunt and catch healthy fish.

Sand Sifter types like a Sri Lanka tend to be VERY fragile and often are already on the road to death before they are baught from the pet store so be warry if you are looking for one of those. One Sand sifter in General, especially if its a large one, can clean out the DSB of a 55gl, if you got 2 sand sifters without supplimental feeding they have a good chance of starving to death

Knobby stars like the Chocolate Chip or Crown of Thorns are preditory and will eat inverts like corals, snails, and clams, and often need supplimental feeding of meaty foods, however Knobby stars are among the hardiest of starfish.
