My aquarium is in the home stretch of cycling. It contains one Red Tailed Shark . I was looking inside, and I noticed that my two lava rocks are covered with brown dust. Does anybody know whats going on?

Diatoms (Greek: διά (dia) = "through" + τέμνειν (temnein) = "to cut", i.e., "cut in half") are a major group of eukaryotic algae

me bad they are a major GROUP (i am guessing that meens they are not algae them selves??) of eukaryotic (what ever that meens!!!) algae, thats what confused me, thanks tho for the expansion of my mind lol

diatoms

Hi,
Diatoms are a type of algae, which is actually a very broad term used for thousands of different species. Diatoms are known for their hard silica shell and ornate designs, but they are in the algae "family" if you can even call it that. Eukaryotic means a certain type of more evolutionary advanced cell where there are certain internal structures present. That's in contrast to prokaryotic cells which are primitive like bacteria and stuff.
So diatoms are a eukaryotic algae.
