I've had my beta for about a week now. He's been doing fine, but today when I got home I didn't see him anywhere. After looking all over I saw him in the plants, not moving. I waited for a few minutes and he still was not moving. I thought he was dead and got the net and proceded to move the plants away and pick him up. As I moved the plants away he swam away. Phew, so he's not dead. I tried feeding him, and he didn't eat. Soon after he went back to hiding in the plants and not moving. Is this normal??

I also have 4 Cardinal Tetras in my 10 gallon tank. They all got along just fine. Water parameters are just fine. Temp was a little on the low side, about 76. I bumped the heater up a little, so that should help.

Ok, now he's hovering in the corner....pretty much motionless. But he's breathing every once in a while.

Oh, his body is purple, but his face is a rusty color. He came like that, so I don't think its a sign of something. Just thought I'd mention it.

This means you have a happy beta. you can stop worrying this is normal betta stuff. Mine does it all the time. Gets right into the plant and flop doesnt even care if hes sidways. I swear when he does die i wont notice for days. LOL

I checked on him this moring and he was dead :(. I don't know what happened. The other fish are fine, and water parameters are normal. I guess he just got sick.

Well dont i feel like a dumbass now :o

Sorry to hear about your beta, what you described is normal beavior for beta's though, It is quite common for them to lie around in the tank.

same here. my boyfriends betta will lay around on the plants, on the gravel, under the plants, anywhere. even sideways with his fins all spread out. but usually he won't do that all day, he swims around some and is always hungry at feeding time, eats his pellets up in no time flat. I'm sorry yours didn't make it, I'm not sure what could have been wrong with it either.

Just goes to show you, every fish is different and owners knowing their fish can make a difference. Sorry for your loss.

:OT: I am VERY confused now...
I have always heard NEVER put a betta in with any other fish, for they are VERY aggressive and will attack just about any fish. Is this true, or what do I NOT want to put in the same tank as a betta? They are all alone in the shop, so I would think they are supposed to be all alone... :OT:

From what I've read online, the "keeping Bettas apart" rule is more often for their own protection - like, if you put them in with a bunch of tiger barbs, you'll have one shredded Betta. So mixing a betta with nippy/aggressive fish will not be cute. Ask at your LFS - I have one betta in with some gold Tetras and everyone's cool.

Good luck!

When you see betta's floating and hanging out in the plants, it's actually very natural. One of There original habitats are the shallow rice paddies in thailand. They hang out in the plants and use them for cover from predatory birds flying over.

Some bettas do well in community tanks, others don't. It mostly depends on your individual betta. I would say as a general rule they are best kept solitary, but I have seen some happy bettas in large community tanks.
