Soupysteve's 40gallon breeder journal

If you want to go with hob filtration a Penguin 350 is what I use for my 40 gallon. It moves 350 gph. Better yet get a second filter, like a Penguin 200 and run them both.

I think breeder tanks are more shallow and wider than regular tanks. I am sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've seen that is my understanding. They're interesting, beautiful tanks though!

40 gallon breeders are 18 inches wide while the 'standard' 40 gallon is only 15 inches wide. The breeder is acually more like 44 gallons I believe while the 15 inch wide tank is a bit less than 39 gallons.

hey quick question, with the acid, did you use it straight up or did you dilute it? does it harm the silicone?

I didn't dilute the the acid - but I'm sure that different "brands" could use different concentrations. This stuff is POTENT - one drop on the side walk - SIZZLE SIZZLE. I made sure to buy the same grade of THICK rubber gloves as Brittney Spears' gynecologist does...

haha! though im sure lohans' doc uses thicker... anyway, long with using acid, you let it sit there for a while or you kinda put it on and scurb? sorry for the questions, i got myself a 75 that ive been working on for a while now with no success working up to stronger and stronger cleaning agents.

I just got an old rag that needed to be thrown away anyhow, and poured the acid directly onto the rag and wiped the tank. Some places required a couple of minutes of wiping. Also, I definitely would do this OUTSIDE and where you can get away from the tank every few seconds... the vapors made me hurl my McDonald's. Again, that stuff is STRONG!

I had a 40g breeder years ago. Great tank with lot's of surface area. It has the same footprint of a 50G just not as tall.

So the water is still a bit murky, but I dropped some cash at the LFS and have this badboy up and running.

- water had been slowly dripping from my RO/DI unit since Tuesday night
- layer of "floss" filter media went down first
- 30 lbs of peat came next
- 50 lbs of natural colored gravel followed...
- slapped a thermometer on the side
- threw on a biowheel penguin 200
- added a via-aqua titanium thermometer with remote temperature control
- tossed a dual-tube 36" flourescent strip light (and 36" glass top for 2/3 of the top of the tank)
- bought some pH reducing powder that supposedly drops pH to 6.5
- bought some good 'ol Tetramin (geez, this stuff is the same as it was in '84!)

Could someone point me in the right direction concerning how to post pictures on this forum?
