I don't know much about a sparkling gourami but I can tell you that if it is heated, a betta would THRIVE in a 5 gallon. Plus you get the warm fuzzy feeling of saving them from a tiny little cup!

I think the Gourami needs more space than a 5g (I just bought 1, so I have done a bit of research on them).

So I vote Betta

Guppy Gal
10g
3 male guppies
1 Dwarf Powder blue Gourami

Both would work in a 5g so it’s more of a personal choice, what would make you happy? I would choose a Sparkling Gourami over the betta, but that is because I prefer the less common fish.

Sparkling Gourami’s stay small, maxing out at about 1 ½ inches. One would do alright in a 5g. Maybe not ideal...But one could argue that neither is a 5g for a betta.

That was my thinking exactly! Being only 1.5 inches Max it would be like keeping a single White Cloud Minnow.

guppygal, your thinking of the drawf gourami you have, not the sparkling gourami - there two different species.

My mistake - I didn't know there was an even smaller Gourami. Sorry, as a newbie I should just keep my mouth closed!! :duh:
