Spawning Mop

I use a brand from wal-mart that has a black label and a big red heart (something heart name, can't remember). I don't boil mine but I've used green, a light purple and a dark salmon colored from them for killies and rainbows without having a problem. I also keep some sunken mops for cover in some of my livebearer tanks. KYle

try to get a white one, i dont think they had dies.

Kay, I'll check that out. I've found the best place to read up on spawning with mops et al is any killifish site :)

Aren't you worried about the dyes from the yarn getting into your water? Couple of the sites I went to recommended boiling for at least a half day to remove the dyes. I just couldn't believe how much was in that stuff.

The killifish sites state that a spawing mop has to be dark colored. Ideal is dark green. Obviously, from what snakeskinner is saying, not all fish are as picky as the ones on the sites I visited :)

The idea is to trick them into thinking that it's a nice moss for them to lay their eggs in.

You could pick up a small amount of commercial spawning material quite inexpensively as well.
I do business with this company and can recommend them whole-heartedly:

Otherwise, much luck with your search for better yarn. I know that several LFS in my area offer yarn spawning mops for sale...pricier than making your own, but if the yarn you have worries you, and you'd rather not order something online, you could look into that as well.

When Birgit McKinnon talked about killifish at the last local Aquarium Society meeting, she advised against using white only because you'd never see the eggs to pick them out.

Cool, thanks!
ROFL! Spawntex? All I could envision was my rainbow fish in Spandex suits flashing at the girls.

Nah, if I don't go with this yarn, I'll buy something online. I think I'll boil it a couple more times tonight, once in vinegar, and a couple times in plain water. The vinegar should make it more colorfast.

Thanks for the link

thanks themightyqueenpixie, obvious but couldn't remember the name :) you want non-dyed acrylic. the red heart brand has no dye added and is 100% acrylic. It was also the cheapest I could find. I bought green from the store but found a sack-full of the purple and pink at a garage sale for $2 so I figured it was worth a try. Not all plants are green mind you so the pink/purple/red is a natural color that is found in the wild. Not the shade I have but I doubt the fish know what is correct or not. I have done a few experiments with different killies and have placed green and purple mops in the same tank. Some prefer the green, some prefer the purple. Some prefer bottom, some prefer top. Some prefer tightly wrapped, some loose. You really need to experiment with different mops of different colors and consult with others who have kept the fish you have because not all of them use the same setup or color. KYle
