I'm in the market to get some more spirulina flakes. I've been using Big Al's own brand of spirulina flakes and have gotten some good results. But is there a better brand out there? It seems to me that a flake with spirulina as the main ingredient would be superior to one which spirulina is the third or fourth. So with all the competition out there, whose got the best flake?

Hi valerie,
Thanks for your reply. I'm feeding mostly juvenile and adult Angelfishes.

I have never used HBH products. I have used Omega One flakes before, although not their super veggie flakes. I liked the Omega One flakes, but they are hard to find in my neck of the woods.

I prefer to get flakes that are slightly larger so my adult angels can eat them more readily, and I can crush them for the juveniles.

I use Spirulina Flakes from Goldfish Connection. They're not flakes- they are like tabs about the size of a flattened pea, and they are not just for Goldfish- my Discus scarf them down like he rest of the tropicals. I get a pound for less than $20US.

I have been recently comparing different veggie flakes, and have come to stay with the first ones I bought. Nutrafin Spirulina Algae Flakes. I have compared them to several other flake brands, and these are the largest I've seen. I use them in my larger cichlid tank, and they rarely lose any flakes. They seem to really like these flakes too!

I compared them to some different brands of algae tablets, wafers, and discs. I was pleased to find that the ingredients appeared to be better on my brand! It also comes in a convenient container with a screw-on lid....which keeps 'em fresh.

So, for comparison's on size, nutrition, and overall looks.....Nutrafin Max Spirulina Algae Flakes work well for me! I would suggest getting the smaller container sizes. Yes, you will spend more money over time, but it doesn't have time to lose it's freshness (and nutritional value), and the flakes don't grind themselves to powder as much as when they are in a huge container and sit longer. I go for either the smallest, or second smallest size every time I purchase fish foods. Freshness DOES matter!

Well- with my pound size I should have noted that I vacuum seal it in smaller portions and refrigerate.

I have had a different experience using nutrafin algae flakes then Sumpin'fishy. I found taht yest hte flakes were big when i opened the can but they crumbled VERY easily and half way through i was left with tiny tiny flakes that were too messy to feed to anyhtign but my fry.I bought 2 different cans hoping it was just the can i bought but both were powder half way through the can.

The omega one flakes don't crumble as much and i'm on my second can and haven't had to throw any way due to it being powdery. The HBH graze flakes were a bit smaller when i opened the can but still a decent size. I feed them to my 4-6" africans without them having problems eating them. They do break apart into smaller pieces then the omega one flakes but you can beat their ingredient list when feeding herbivores(Spirulina, green peas, romaine lettuce, zuchinni, spinach as all high up on the list)

Good points Valerie, I do get a little bit of powder at the bottom, but I don't think I've had as much as you have in yours. It is probably the handling of them getting to whatever location you buy if from. Each store probably has different results with flake breakage (although minor differences in most cases, I'm sure).

I have not tried either the HBH Graze or the Omega One varieties. I'm definately up for some trial, though! I have some credit from my LFS, and I think they carry Omega One sometimes. I don't think I've seen HBH anywhere.

You must say, though, that the Nutrafin Max does look very good compared to many other veggie flakes! But I'll look for the others you named next time I'm out for food. Thanks for the info.
