Last night, i decided it would be good for the fish to have some changes to their diet of bloodworms by adding a block of the frozen Baby brine shrimp which these fish have had before even as a staple. I get up this morning to find none of the food eaten, and worse, all the dead shrimp are spread all around the tank, particularily to the darn clump of java moss that seems to collect everything these days. gravel vacuumed it till most was gone, then sat and pondered why the fish had not eaten.

looking @ the date on the bag (at least i was consciensious enought back then to write the date of purchase) i saw that i had apparantely gotten them at 9/13/ 06 or later. the packet that the last blocks came from had about 90% of the other bocks gone, so maybe it was opened and caused too much decomposition?

i have another pack of these from presumably the same date or later that have not been opened at all in the individual cubes. are they still good to use?

was the food bad, or were my fihs spoiled, or were the BBS just too petty a meal?

please help...

thank you, B.w.

If it was already opened it is possible that the food had freezer burn. If this happens the fish will refuse to eat it so it must taste nasty. As far as the other package of food that has not been opened, unless it has an expiration date on it and it shows no signs of frezzer burn, I would assume that it is fine to feed to your fish.

I find my fish will refuse to eat frozen foods I've had for more than 3 months or so, freezer-burned or not. I try to use my supply up within 6-8 weeks and restock with fresh product. Of course I pass a petstore on my way home, so it's no big deal to stop in.

Think of it this way, meats frozen for human consumption taste a bit funky after more than a few months of being frozen, even if there are no signs of freezer burn.
