Hello all,

So I have been slowly but surely collecting everything I need to build my own sponge filter for a betta breeding tank and i have a few questions.

1st. does the height of the tube that goes into the sponge matter?
2nd. in regards to the part of tube that will be in the sponge, what would be more efficient thousands (not literally) of tiny holes or as many larger holes as can fit? does it matter?
3rd. how long should i run it to help build nitrates safe enough for my breeding bettas and thier spawn?
4th. do I run the tube all the way through the sponge to the other side or stop short of breaching through the bottom?

thats all for now but i know more questions may arise, Thank you all in advanced for your help.

Btw the thing i have gathered are, sponge, a tube from an old undergravel filter, airstone, airpump, a valve to control the air flow. anything else u guys think i need?

I didn't even know you could breed Marine Bettas in captivity but I guess you can.

It is possible to breed Marine Betta fish in aquariums and aquarium breed fish are available in the aquarium trade from time to time. Tank breed fish are often of better quality and is often a better buy even if they are smaller then wild caught. It is hard to sex this species. They lay up to 500 eggs on the roof of a cave and the eggs hatch after 5 days. The fry only has a very small yolk sac and will start to eat almost instantaneously after being hatched. Marine Betta fry grows slowly and needs 7 months to adapt the adult coloration. Marine Betta fish has a relatively rough spawning act that often result in damaged finage on the parents.

I don't believe this one involves marine bettas. arise1dwr, if you did mean marine bettas, then pm me to move this topic back, but I'm moving it in the interim.

Ok so i just came across another question, what meds/aids would you guys suggest i add to the water to keep the fry healthy, the current meds/aids i have are, aquarium salt, QuICK Cure, MelaFix, and PimaFix. I havent added any yet but I just plan on adding Aquarium salt. Thanks again guys.

well they are just a thought right now, the bettas i have have been introduced and she is showing verticle stripes, Ive read of ppl using some kind of fungus deterent, would you recomend that too THEBETTA?

Don't add any meds unless they are sick. They'll just become immune to it. vertical stripes on a betta usually are stress indicators.
If it were me, I'd do research and have hands on experience keeping bettas before trying to spawn them...

ive spawned them before just had fry all die, and have kept bettas for about 12 years now verticle stripes do not mean stress on a female betta who is facing a male betta in a tank across from her, it means she is ready to breed.
