Sponge filters???

i use them in most of my tanks as a micron filter of sorts. work wonderfully for polishing water!

only draw back are trying to clean them out completely, they trap and hold soooo much dissolved poop its unbelievable, i use them in my goldie tanks as extra bio,. just in case and they polish and keep clean ton of stuff,..

i'm actually in the process of replacing several of my hob filters with sponge filters. i feel like most of the power filters i have are just a waste of money (buying replacement cartridges). i do partial water changes every week, and have lots of live plants in all of my tanks, from what i can tell, the sponge filters do a wonderful job.

Run many sponges..even in tanks that have HOB and canisters...quick bacteria source for new or QT tanks....inexpensive to boot....

Sponge filters are great , keep in mind the type of foam you get makes a big difference. There are many types on the market , by far the best we have ever used is from Swiss tropics here is the link:

We have found that these sponges last a long time and are easy to clean, just rince in old tank water and smack the on the side of a bucket.

I've seen a few tanks on here and some in a (very nice) LFS in Austin using these sponge filters. I was wondering how good they are and would they be recommended?

These are the ones with the sponge sitting on the bottom of the tank and a hose going to a powerhead.

Thanks

Sponges are the way to go, spend a little more it will pay off in the long run.

Here is a pic of the ones we make ,they cost us around $9.00 each and they last a very long time.

I honestly don't see this as a drawback, I use sponges for two reasons...

1) In fry tanks (keep the little guys safe) and ...
2) To filter POOP out of the water.

Remember the sponge/floss etc are the mechanical filters.

A hint to clean then out (don't clean them completely, it's bad)

Seriously, when you want to clean them get a bucket of used tank water (from the same tank, when doing a WC) then squeeze the sponges numerous times in the water. dump the bucket & start over. Do this a few times till the sponges are as clean as you like.

Finally put them back & wash your hands.
