I purchased this one
hydrosponge3.jpg

Hydro sponge filter 3; 4” H x 3-3/4” W (up to 40 gal.)-$6.99
Capable of moving more water than other sponge filters.
*One inch diameter lift tube allows use of power head without adapters

and set it up 2 weeks ago and put it in my 55 gallon tank right away....( it still looks clean and new)

is it seeded enough to go in my newly set up tank?
and its loud, ( I am using a pump and tubing) what size air stone do I buy to calm it down?

it should be. they dont produce much of a bio load.

You could try a powerhead rather than an airstone. I find all airpumps to be noisy.

i would use what you have and change later if its bothersome. the sponge should be seeded plenty by now for shrimp and snails. That is the same kind i use, i like them. I have 5 of them going off teh same air pump with a gang valve though and don't really notice how loud it is other than teh bubbling.

maybe my pump is to big LOL! I think I to will buy a few more sponge this weekend and start them up, good to have seeded ones when needed!

A few things:

1. http://www.kensfish.com/spongefilterlinks.html is the cheapest place to get ATI sponges and parts.
2. Get a control valve to go inline so you can regulate flow.
3. you can quiet and airpump some by setting in something soft- a washclosth works well.
4. If the pump is big enough you can get a gang valve and run more than one sponge.

you can pick up a good powerhead for less than 25 bucks.

the sponge should be seeded and ready to go by now. :)
