I'm considering getting some sponges to add some colour to my tank. Whilst I am currently studying my head of trying to find info, I thought I'd ask to see if anyone has bought some and what needs they have.

I didn't buy mine, they actually came on LR, however, I have found that mine do well in a lower light atmosphere. When i move them to my reef tank, they seem to shrivel and die, ..not much help, but i figured i would share that.
Hey no, all comments welcome. i've been advised that the one I'm intersted in likes lower light so that helps confirm that.
Sponges grow best in a separate side tank like a fuge with slower flow(400gph). They don't like the light as algae can grow over the porous surfaces. I have blue, white, and orange sponges in my tank under the rocks. HTH, Rich
I should also say, they are in my FOWLR, and they do seem to do best in the lower flow areas,( lower parts of the rocks, ect) like MRfiremouth said. i have several colors, and many are growing quite beautifully.

Thanks for your help. I also have sponges (mainly blue) growing (rapidly) in my main tank. The sponge I was looking at purchasing is an orange jagger sponge which has a branch type shape to it but I know it's virtually impossible to I.D a species without chopping it up.
also getting a "good" spounge is hard because once they are in the air, ie not in the water they start to die, they have to be bagged in watter and dumped in water with out introduction of oxygen, so its kinda hard to believe that the spounge didnt get that in the shipping process. if you get one make sure its been in the store for a few days/a week to see if it is dieing
yeah, lol, i have absolutely no idea what kind mine actually are, lol, i just love them...they seem to be doing well, I agree, make sure they have been in the store for a few, it took mine almost a full month, to actually color back up, after moving the tank. See if the LFS will hold it for you, until you can get a good feel on how well it is going to recoup if they recently got it in!
When bagging and transporting the sponges, just keep them submerged and don't put any air in the bag. that will help with damage.
