Spotted Coryadoras

I was in the local Petsmart (blasphemy, I know) the other day and noticed "Spotted Cory." I had never heard of this species, but the label said it grew to be 2" and was a 'community fish' (duh). I tried looking up the spotted cory on Google but didn't meet a whole lot of success. I imagine it must be pretty mainstream if Petsmart sells it, but the AC species profile did not have it and some catfish database (the name eludes me) seemed to have it under Corydoras punctatus, but the only common name given was C12. At any rate, I'm having trouble finding pygmies and juliis locally, would this be an acceptable substittue? They are very pleasing visually. I think I am in love.

Try looking up Pepper Cory and Panda Cory, chances are it's 1 of the 2.

I have some pepper cories but i've never heard them called spotted cories before. Pepper ones are kind of grey blotchy with some irridescent sheen on thier gill plate. They don't get too big, i don't think.

Definately not the panda, as it's not even spotted (it's more of a patch); or the peppered (it's not really spotted either). The corydoras punctatus is called the spotted cory, just as it's named at petsmart.

Yeah, I did use that website. For verification I plugged the Latin name into the catfish database, and it came up with C12.

Anyway, I was in the LFS today and I noticed a tank full of "julii" cories. Woo-hoo, I finally found them.... or so I thought. On closer inspection they looked identical to the spotted cories I saw in the P-mart ($1 cheaper but 1" smaller, eh). I pointed out the oversight to a 'fish-specialist' employee who thought I was crazy. Supposedly the label for the fish comes in a box with the fish from the breeder. Also this breeder is God and *cannot* be wrong! But she said she would get the manager to check into it.

So I am still looking for Julii's but I think I have found a substitute in Spotted cories.

Another side note: I thought I found pygmies today, too, but they were just really, really small albinos.

According to Planet Catfish Julii are one of the most mislabelled fish in LFSs. I bought some that are actually c. trillineatus but also c. reticulatus are similar. Try looking for those at Planet Catfish
