Are they going in your 280? It might be hit or miss how the gar especially does with cichlids. Are you going to qt?
We need more info. 
Gars don't always do well with cichilds. They don't fight back at all if picked on and if they get chased they can crash into the sides of the tank resulting in a broken snout or back. They also have a habit of attacking shiny fish such as an arowana.

I've heard that tanks around 300 gallons are the minimum for silver aro's, which won't leave much room if any for tankmates. It won't work with the current 280 stock IMO.

i was hoping to get atleast one of each for the 280 (and they would be the only things in there) untill i get my custom made which will be 10 by 3.

I am fairly certain that several of the replies above asked what tank they were going in, its only natural that someone would assume you plan to put them in your 280G since you did not mention any other tank plans.
Personally, I would not get any until you have the 10 x 3 tank built, the "it's OK, I will upgrade later" response is typical when anyone is informed that the fish they want is going to be too big for their tank. Get the tank first, then get the fish.
