You could house a tropical gar or florida gar in that tank for life though. I have a tropical and just adore him. here is a pic:

Right now just a 4x2x2, he is only about 15". I am building an 8x4x4.

They get about 30" or so I believe. Smaller of the gars. If you haven't been over before, I would really recommend reading in the primitive fish seciton of www.monsterfishkeepers.com. Its our sister site and there is some outstanding info over there.

ps I think it is fine to keep an arro in a 280g tank. lots over on MFK keep them in smaller tanks than that (180s and 220s) and they do great.

Most Florida Gars max out at under 2 feet in captivity. Trops are pretty similar.
