I read a lot about positioning the spray bar underwater so that the water surface will not be disturbed. Will doing this still reduce the amount of oxygen in the water to a point that will harm the fish?
Your O2 levels will be fine as long as theres some sort of surface agitation. You're actually supposed to place it underwater, you could point it up towards the surface if you're worried.
Mine's just under the surface - the water at the surface moves around, but isn't agitated. Works like a charm
I can't imagine keeping a tank with the spray bar above the water; the noise would drive me absolutely insane!
I am thimking seriously about asking for the H.O.T. Magnum Pro System for Christmas.
I would like to use it to polish my water and I thought the Power Kleen gravel washer would be nice. The only other part remaining is the Bio Wheel.
Would I benefit from attaching the Bio-Wheel to my output hose and use it rather than the spray bar?
Thanks for the advice.
I had a bad expirience with my spraybar. I positioned it to go up so it would agitate. I did a water change. P.S. water got everywhere. :smacked myself in face:

I had a similar experience!
I was changeing water and decided to turn the filter back on, but the spray bar was still above the surface. The spray is pretty strong, the water rainbowed out of the tank and made a pool of water 3 feet away! Not to mention i got a face full of water!
Now i always make sure the spray bar is under the water line before turning the filter back on.
Place your spraybar about 1" underwater keeping the holes (waterflow) straight out or parallel to the surface. You should have more than enough surface movement this way.
What do you guys think about the Bio-Wheel on the HOT Magnum Pro system? Would it produce too much surface agitation which would lead to loss of C02? I would like to have the HOT magnum to polish my water and the Power Kleen Gravel washer seems like a handy item.
I may still go with the HOT magnum canister even if the Bio-Wheel would not be the best thing for a planted tank.
I'm using a Penguin 170 as well as a canister on a planted tank, and as long as I keep the water level high enough to avoid splashing, CO2 levels are fine.
