spraybar question for filstar users

I set up my tank with my new Filstar xp2. I am using a sand and fluorite substrate.
I wasn't sure how to aim the spraybar, so kinda aimed it down maybe at a 35 to 45 degree angle, instead of straight out. I am noticing a ridged pattern in the sand from it, do you think it is pointed downward too much? And I also notice stuff floating on top of the water. What do you do about that? If the spraybar is pointed upward will it force that down into circulation to be picked up by the intake? Or is there something else I need to do.

And would it be good to put a sponge on the intake to keep sand from getting into the filter? Or does that matter?

I have mine aimed a but up. This prevents my plants from beening up rooted. Yes, you shcould put a pre filter over the intake. This will help the impeller last longer.

With sand I'd use a pre-filter - AquaClear sponges work really well and don't clog up like fine sponges (a clogged sponge puts stress on the motor). I aim my spray bar straight across the top of the water. Because it's a planted tank, I want the surfact to 'roll' without breaking (to retain CO2). I find this keeps the water circulating well without disturbing anything.

A prefilter is a good idea with gravel also?

It is not needed. It just puts un-need stress on the filter. The filter media should collect that stuff.

I did aim the spraybar out instead of down, and I'd not thought of avoiding breaking the surface of the water.

I align my spray vertically at the opposite wall of the intake. The fish go over once in awhile to enjoy the current. Its deflected toward the glass. You can move it around as needed which is a nice thing with spraybars.
