LOL......hey....if we only knew !!!

My DH works at a fabrication plant that ships ironworkers up to Canada on a regular basis. Several of the Canadian trucks that have come in have had these huge "elk catchers" on the front-they're about twice the size & twice the strength as our cow catchers for pickups down here in the US. One of the drivers told him that the insurance companies pay for those to be put on the semis, cause the guard costs about $2000, but fixing a semi after hitting one of those monsters can run upwards of $15000! WOW!

Moose fact- Moose kill more people every year in North America than any other animal.

Er, people kill more people than any other animal in north america.
Second is the domestic dog.
Deer/elk are third.

My dad hit a Santa Gertrudis bull once. He was huge, it totaled the truck. I would assume it would be similar to hitting a moose.

...Thank God they were both FEMALE and...

I'd worry more about a cow moose than a bull. Bulls tend to only be aggressive during the rut, but a cow will be defending a her calf for 2 years. As with most wildlife, a cow can kill in defense of her young. The male won't concern himself with you until you force the issue.

Of course--standard disclaimer--it's called wildlife for a reason. Approaching ANY wild animal that you haven't just shot is stupid, and can result in serious behavior problems that result in the animal being put down when it comes into conflict with a human.

Ummm..it WAS the rut.....and the cows had no calves....and we didn't INTENTIonally walk up to them.....we were ALL very surprised (including the moose!) to look up and suddenly see each other.

I would NEVER walk up to a wild animal on purpose...I have a few more brains than that....(lol....not many more...but enough !)

Oh...and it can be stupid to walk up to an animal you've just shot...if you aren't sure it's dead...

For North America maybe. In this province we have no deer/elk and a virtually non-existent homicide rate. My guess would be moose would be number 1. Course more moose die than people by far.

Emg--wasn't implying that you did intentionally walk up on the moose. :)

A co-worker walked up on an elk he'd shot during archery season, only to discover it was very much alive. He ended up having to build a spear and having a fellow hunter distract the bull enough that he could get in close enough with the spear to kill it. Scary at the time, but a great story!
