Stain then assemble? Or assemble then stain?

I'm building a 75g stand (pics coming later)

I'm not sure which way to do it. I'm thinking it would be easier to stain when assembled, then I wouldn't have to prop up my wood pieces in odd positions.

If I stained unassembled there might be less chance for running.

Opinions? (It's not assembled yet, just cut ect)

If you're building 5 piece raised panel doors, then stain the panel before assembling the doors, otherwise stain after everything is built.

Its like your drawers.... its up to you..unless what the above stated applies... ;)

Don't I have to worry about my stain/polyurethane running?

If it's just stain you can also apply it with a rag. If it's stain with poly in it apply with a brush. I recommend poly though to seal it. I would do this after assembly or you will be propping things and having to return later for the other side.

Most stain is designed to wipe on/wipe off, so running shouldn't be a problem.
I'd spray the cabinet inside and out with a sealer/lacquer that is sanded in between coats.

As long as you use a light hand with the stain, you will be fine. Better to add two coats than have one drippy, gooey one 8)
