Silicone doesn't stick to slate very well. You can fix them by cutting a piece of window glass to fit in the bottom and scraping all the black sealant from the inside that you can. Then re-seal the inside with silicone.
They don't have a lip on the inside of the top, and if you lay a piece of glass across the top you can get condensation dripping over the edge. The old-style metal hoods don't have this problem.
