stand overhanging the tank

I'll try to upload some pics of the dresser at different angles.

OK I added 3 pics of the dresser and to see them please check my perosonal gallery. My fish tank has already been paid for and it will arrive next week. The dimensions are 160 cm lenght X 45 cm width X 55 cm hight which equals to approx. 105 gallons (400L). The dresser stands at 154 cm lenght X 47 cm width X 86 cm height.

On overhang I would suggest not to do it.

What will work is to glue several boards together (72" length by 18" width tank would require gluing 6 boards 1"x4"x8' together). Cut them down to 74"x20" sand the crap out of them until smooth and level. Then router the edges with a half round blade. Quick hand sand edges then stain and seal with polyurethane(several coats). Then place this on the area that is too small for your tank. Only do this if the overhang is a couple of inches length-wise or one inch width-wise.

Also be darn sure the item can support the weight

Dresser are made for storage weight inside not on top. Maybe modify with supports made out of 4 x 6 and a top that the tank does not over hang. But if I were to do all that I would just build one to specs for size and weight.

Having the tank overhang the stand like that is asking for trouble. It puts a great deal of stress on the areas that aren't supported by the stand. It's not a good idea.

And with respect to the dresser itself, by the time you get through adding gravel, a 100G tank is going to be closer to 1000lbs than 800.

There's no way I'd trust that thing to hold that kind of weight. It might-and I stress might-hold it for a period of time, but eventually it will probably fatigue and fail. I can assure you that being able to support a 1/2 ton static load was not in that thing's design criteria.

If you want to risk the cost and hassle of finding 125 gallons worth of water, gravel, dead/dying fish and shattered glass on your floor one evening, go for it. If not, buy or build a decent stand. Wood is a lot cheaper than cleaning up after that thing lets go would be.

i did demo and clean-outs for a side job for a while. i can assure you i can lift that dresser at an angle and toss it down in my driveway once and it'll be rubble. don't do it... 800#'s of water shifting is a serious contender... with or without additional gravel.
