I use 1/2" also. You can use thicker but it costs more for no more protection unless you have a really bad twist in your stand and if that is the case I would think about replacing the stand.

(GlassCages) requires 3/4" styrofoam between the tank base & stand top. Failure is a violation of their warranty. "T"
