Ok, so I was wanting to get some kind of starfish in my tank but I wanted to know what kinds are good for my tank (28 gal FOWLR, reef to be). I was thinking about a serpent star.
Sea stars really don't serve a purpose in the aquarium other than something pretty to look at, so you're going to want one that is diurnal, which means its active during the day. You'll also want one that wont try to eat sleeping or sick fish.
The sand sifting one I bought, for example, i later learned needed a much bigger sand bed than i could provide, and would have been detrimental to my tank, as well as to itself. Certain death from starvation after it had eaten all the life in my sandbed.
So, I traded it for some zoas and mushrooms...but that's neither here nor there.
I like the looks of the blue ones, but a lot of them need to be fed all the time...placing meats underneath them, and such...
Anyway, good luck. You could always try to get infested by asteria.
I love the chocolate chip starfish and no you can't eat him LOL. I've had him for about three years and have seen him extrude his stomach to eat algae it is something to see.
Yeah the Chocolate Chip Star are nice. I had one myself. However if you plan on having coral I wouldnt get one. They will eat just about anything including coral. Thus I had to get rid of mine : (
