Well, I've came to the decision which I beleive is a good one. I would like to start up a 12 gallon Eclipse tank which would hosue some tiny fish, maybe a crab or two and anemones or somethin' of that nature. Now, I know I'll have to grab a protein skimmer in order for the anemone to live and I know I need some half decent lighting. The Eclipse comes with one PC fixture, and I think that I'll have to install another one to have enough lighting in the tank...

Here are a few questions...

1. What would be a decent skimmer in this case? I heard about a Saline Solution from my LFS... any ideas?

2. Lighting, would an anemone do good with two PC's under the hood of the Eclipse?

3. Is the filter that comes with the Eclipse decent for somewhat of a 'reefer' setup?

4. What inhabitants ( fish wise ) can I put in such a small tank...

...and finally... if anyone has a setup like this, can you post the equipment that you have for the setup... I would like to get a rough idea of what I'm lookin' for... actually, any tips in general would be nice ;)

Thanks ...

Mike

1. not sure that you'll need one if you don't overstock or have real active critters. " My 10 doesn't have one but it only has a gobie some shrooms and l.r.

2. Maybe how many wats is it? Also most of them get WAY too big for this tank but you might be able to do with a condy or epi if you don't want clowns or have anything else that they could sting or eat. A bubble tip MIGHT make it if you have enought light and nearly perfect water conditions. That will be kind of hard to maintain in a tank this small until you get some practice IMO.

3. don't know all I use is live rock and sand. That should work in your nano as well go for 12 to 24 lbs. just run the filter empty for water movement it won't do much except catch trash and cause a nitrate problem anyway with media.

4. bi colored gobie, royal gramah, maybe a pajama cardinal " that might be pushing it IME but I'm chicken", Also several others but again I'm chicken so make sure that your tanks not overstocked and the inch of fish to a gallon of h20 is a load of poop. I'd probably ask b/4 I bought and see what everyone else say's but, even then you'll have to really, really know what you want cause you can't put much in that tank at all.

Chris oh and welcome to ac central

i dont think youll be able to put more than 2 fish, maybe 3 in that tank. but it depends on what fish you want. i know im planning on setting up a 3 gallon, and im gonna get a clown goby for that possibly

I know this might sound newbish, but my LFS said ( I know, I know ) that two clowns would do fine...

Again, dont pounce on me b'cause I said that now... I know that in some cases LFS CAN be somewhat misleading... thats why I'm here... I'm doin' all my research before I can get "Nemo" for moms living room peice...

The PC that comes with the Eclipse 12 is a 13 watter I beleive, and I would definetly buy another fixture ( allready have one planned ), but whats the MAX watts I can get with a small PC that would be suitable for an Eclipse 12... two of them of course ;)

Mike

The CW seems to be that if you get 2 clowns when they are young they will bond and become a pair. They may even mate. If you check a compatability chart it will say that they are best kept singly.

I had a pair and lost them both. Tho I think one died from stress and the other from an aipistasia (sic?) sting.

The LFS will tell you anything...usually.

My local chain retailer(who shall remain nameless) had some interesting fish today.
2. purple tangs
1 seneschal tang
1 koran angel
1 flame angel
1 batfish
2 puffers i didn't id
and something else pretty rare and interesting i can't remember

My point is that someone who doesn't know what they are getting into may put one of those fish in a system that can't handle it. Several of those fish need 100 gallon or larger established systems. Do you think the store will even ask if the buyer can handle the fish? This particular store doesn't guarantee its SW fish becase "People keep putting them in fresh water systems." I worry about things like that.

Whats CW?

Oh, and I was reading other posts to gain some more knowledge, and came across this acronym, DSB, whats that mean?

Sorry, but I'm new with this lingo :)

Mike

I think CW is "common wisdom." Heck in this case, it's even true. Clowns start out essentially sexless, then work out who will be dominant and who will be submissive. The dominant fish becomes the female. If she goes, the male then transforms into a female. But they can't go back.

In my opinion, you're pushing it a little to have a pair of clowns in a 12 gallon. Go with smaller species, like percula, ocellaris, pinks or skunks, if you decide to do it.

If you avoid the anemone, you will save a lot on lighting and hassle.

Hmmm... would I need a lesser light situation for bubble coral rather then an anemone? I've read that aneomne survival rate is horrid...
