I am starting a freshwater tank, either 29 or 30 gallons most likely and I want to have a Black Ghost Knife as my center piece. What other exotic looking freshwater fish do you think I should add? Comments? Suggestions?

Hey and welcome to AC,
Sorry to rain on your parade but a 30g isn't going to be any where big enough for a BGK (Apteronotus albifrons?). These guys get pretty big, so you might want to re-consider your stocking choice or look at a bigger tank. Here is a link to the profile here:

I was told that I could grow him to the capacity of the tank and then when he became too big I would sell him back to the store (sales person from the store told me this) for a fraction of what they tink they could get for him on the market.
I know it isnt the most ideal way of approaching things but I was also told that they grow quite slowly. Let me know if I have been misinformed. Also let me know of any other " center pieces" that would be a good replacement.
well. in my own opinion, maybe try a pair of german blue rams? i think they are really pretty, and they are fairly peaceful. they arent big, though, if that's what you're going for.
perhaps if you want a big fish, you can look into something like a discus. though, they do like to be in a species tank.

I wouldn't rely on what a sales person at a fish store tells you. Heck there is a chance that a few months from now they will change their policy and not accept fish unless it comes from a breeder.
Fish can grow slowly in small tanks but often this is due to a stunting of their growth which in turn shortens their lives.
If this is the fish you really want then I suggest looking into a bigger tank.
The rams are a nice suggestion for a 30 gallon tank. You really should look at them.

Thanks for all the help! Just to let you know, Im not going for a species tank, I just want to make it look as exotic as possible. If anyone else has any other suggestions I would greatly appreciate them.
