Starting Back Up Again...Questions About Using Seachem Stability

Incidentally, Loach, today's API readings (this is since doing that large 50-percent water change the other day) were:

Ammonia: 0.25 ppm
Nitrite: STILL 0 ppm
NitrAte: STILL between 0 and 5.0 ppm

Oh, because you said this:

However most here don't really recommend keeping goldfish in tanks

Goldfish grow too large, they are very social fish that need to be kept in schools so they need very big tanks, proper filters, they're messy and need plenty of water changes, that is not the type of fish we recommend to folks coming here. As you have seen on the Injaf page, there are other fish that look just like goldfish such as rosy and golden barbs that stay small and are easier to keep. On top of that, we don't really recommend deformed fish like the fancy goldfish or "balloon" varieties because of the problems these fish go through.

I realize that they're not of the tropical variety; our home, though, is constantly kept cool in the summer via central air conditioning. We make sure of that. The average temperature is around 75 degrees.

That is a tropical temperature. Meaning you would be able to keep most tropical fish without a heater.

There seems to be no change in either of your readings, have you checked whether the Stability is expired?

The bottle of Stability is brand new, bought before we set the tank up a month ago.

I, and my wife, happen to enjoy keeping and "raising" goldfish, and we plan on doing the best we can while providing the most ideal environment for them in a home aquarium. Thus, we don't plan to pack the 60 gallon with massive orandas, lionheads or other exotic varieties...we will keep monitoring the growth of these two and perhaps add two more of slightly larger size at some point. No more.

An unrelated question:

If we want to replace the Aqueon HOB, would you recommend an AquaClear 70 or perhaps Seachem's Tidal 75? Which would you go with?

And have you any experience with Seachem's Purigen? If so, what would be the best position for the 100ml packs in the filter media basket -- should it be the very last thing the water goes through on the top, or should it sit just below the bio material?

I don't doubt that you bought the bottle brand new, but does it have an expiration date on it? Never used Purigen. If it is fine, it should be last. Haven't used those filters so can't recommend the one over the other.

Don't recall the expiration date exactly, but it was an "up-to-date" bottle.

Thanks about the filters/Purigen; indeed, it is very fine resin-like material, so it probably should come last -- the thing is, these packets are so light, they normally need the bio rings to hold them down so they don't float away from the filter flow. Is there any danger in leaving polishing material just before the bio filtration?

I see.

Here were today's readings (7/28), Loach, for what it's worth; something is DEFINITELY wrong with either my water, tank or testing chemicals:

Ammonia: We're back to being closer to 0.50 ppm
Nitrite: STILL hasn't moved from 0 ppm
NitrAte: STILL between 0 and 5.0 ppm

My recommendation is to get some live plants in there, like water sprite or guppy grass it will help with water quality and your fish will like it as well.
