Starting over

I can feel your pain here. Getting into live plants takes some patients. The main reason I have found is the lack of knowledge. There is a sea of info to drowned in as well. What I suggest is to pick one area to start with, say lighting. Do some searches on this site, there is a ton of info. I know it is hard to figure out what is true/ right...if you have questions, ask. That is what we are here for.

Now for my suggestions:

Byron has covered a ton of stuff, trust him he knows his stuff.

Now for the light, any chance you can hang it?
If you raise it up it will reduce the overall effect the light has on the plants.

As for the missing nutrients, dry ferts are cheap and easy to use. The estimated index is a good guide to providing the correct amount FYI.
But these suggestions may not be enough without Co2 being injected. If you truly want to stay Co2 free, the plants mentioned are a good starting place. Raising the light and a modified version of E.I. along with a large amount of plants from the get go should make this possible.
