I was given a 35g tank with a steel frame. This tank has been gooped up with silicone and looks horrible. I want to re-do it and can't figure out how to get the steel frame off of it.
I'll put it back on as soon as I re-do the tank. so destroying it is outa the question. .................Any ideas??

umm i think you could cut away the silocone and then pull out the glass.

Just be careful trying to pull the glass out if you bend it it might break but otherwise just cut off all the old silicon to get the glass out and then clean it thoroughly before re-sealing it.

You may find that the glass is silicone'd into the frame from both sides in this case I suggest a flexible blade to slide between the glass and the frame, only don't bend the blade to much or it'll snap and may cause injury.

Yea. Life is short; it's only a 35 gallon. IMO it's not worth bothering with. I'm sure you could find something alot more enjoyable to do with the time you'd have to put into renovating this thing.

^ I agree.

Plus, the metal framed tanks are kind of cool, IMO.

you can reseal them successfully without removing the steel frame. Just scrape out all the interior silicone with a razorblade, clean all the surfaces with rubbing alcohol, and reseal it.

Not only is the inside all gooped up, but they gooped up the outside of it also.
I got to looking at it today and I believe I just might toss it in to a dumpster.
I'd be just as well off going out and buying a new tank.

I just used a razor blade to clean up silicone on the glass top on one of my tanks tonight. Really, it works great, so try it! Maybe you could post a pic and get some opinions on how bad is bad before you toss that piece of history. :)
