Steve's Reef Diary - new experience

I don't remember the brand of the powerhead, but it is made by the same company that makes the wave machine he is planing to buy in the future.

One of the shrimp didn't make it - but we are not surprised - we were advised to acclimate them for 3 hours using a floating tupperware dish - of course the ater current upset the dish, and they went in the water way too soon.

We have a starfish that came in on the live rock - Asterina, I believe grins called it - we posted a pic in the ID this star, please posting.

I love the chromi and the snail shot - and never did figure out why he was shimmying when he was bullying the shrimp....

the music was Bob Marley, of course - needed some kind of island music for a reef tank vid!!! Pink Floyd just didn't cut it for that one :)

Thanks

Updated pics tomorrow - stuff added!!!!

Okay - we added some more stuff - will post pics tomorrow.

1 serpent star (which I keep calling an octopus for some silly reason - he kinda looks like one)

1 cardinal baby

1 daisy polyp (which feel and got fragged into 2 daisy polyp colonies)

one of the shrimps died  , but we replaced it.

the green polyp got fragged in two the same way as the daisy. Cleaning algae off the tank back, and oops, avalanche!!!

Hello, Kitty & I have a new project, 125 gallon glass tank which we'll be converting to salt. So I have a few questions. First, opinions on purchasing a retail sump fuge combo or going with a DIY setup. Next can I use the lace and lava rock which came with the tank for base rock and if so about how long until the live rock and sand seeds it? And last for now which type of lighting to go with. Would like to get away from the more light is better school of thought to which lights are best for the animals being kept. (would like to avoid the added expence of a chiller) All opinions and info are welcome, we do have time for reserch etc. since the bank account will not allow us to go hog wild at this time. Thanks.

Congrats! If you're at all handy at DIY I'd go with the DIY sump/fuge. Do you know if the glass is tempered because I'd personally want a tank that size reef ready. Base rock is fine to use, but not lava rock as it can and often will leach out metals into the system. How long it will take to seed base rock is dependent on what ratio of base to live you use and even then it is just a wild guess.

To answer your light question what are you wanting to stock the tank with?

new pics

So far we have 2 green and brown polyps, 2 daisy corals, a frog spawn, and we just bought a fox coral.
We have a SW cardinal, 2 clowns, a white goby, 2 firefish, and 3 blue-green chromis

Will try to get you some pics of the daisies soon, Grins. We were unaware of the fragility of this species. I tried to get info a while back without much success. the lfs has some in their tank that have been there, and flourished since they opened the store. They say they rarely get these corals, and now I understand why. they got 3 pieces in a bit ago and we bought some. We were told that we didn't need to feed every day, but I just read differently, and we will start feeding them every day now. Will keep you posted.
